Managing Constipation While Taking GLP-1 Medications
For many patients on GLP-1 medications, constipation can become an uncomfortable side effect, especially as the dosage increases. While these medications are highly effective for weight loss and managing diabetes, they can affect the digestive system in various ways. Here at Flow Wellness, we want to help you understand why these symptoms occur and how you can manage them effectively.
Digestive Changes with GLP-1 Medications
During the first few months of treatment, many patients may experience changes in their bowel movements, including both constipation and diarrhea. However, constipation tends to become more common as patients progress to higher doses of GLP-1 medications. This can happen because these medications slow down gastric emptying, reducing how fast food moves through the digestive system.
Strategies to Prevent and Manage Constipation
If you’re experiencing constipation, don’t worry—there are several strategies that can help keep you regular and comfortable:
- Increase Fiber Intake:
One of the best ways to prevent constipation is by increasing your daily fiber intake. Fiber helps bulk up the stool and makes it easier to pass through the digestive system. Be sure to drink plenty of water to help the fiber work effectively. Total dietary intake should be at least 30 grams per day.-
Some foods that are high in fiber include: beans and peas, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, chickpeas, quinoa, and avocados.
- Fiber Supplements
- In addition to increased fiber intake with diet, we recommend taking psyllium fiber capsule (Three capsules = 1 gram of fiber) or a similar fiber supplement such as Metamucil (One teaspoon = 5 grams of fiber).
- Fiber gummies also help. Three gummies have 7 grams of fiber.
-
- Add Miralax:
If you find that fiber is not enough, you can add Miralax (polyethylene glycol) to your regimen. Take this according to package instructions. - Use Senna if needed:
If you are not having a daily bowel movement, adding a senna supplement can help. Senna is a natural stimulant laxative that can be taken in addition to fiber and miralax. If taking for more than 2 weeks, please mention to your clinician.
Stay Ahead of Digestive Issues
While constipation can be an uncomfortable side effect of GLP-1 medications, following these recommendations can help you stay regular and prevent symptoms from interfering with your progress. Remember to speak with your healthcare provider if your constipation is persistent or if you’re unsure about adding any new supplements to your routine.
