Here’s How to Beat Fatigue and Get Your Energy Back while taking GLP-1 Medication
Starting a GLP-1 medication like Wegovy (semaglutide) or Zepbound (tirzepatide) can be an exciting step toward improving your health and losing weight. However, one of the most common things we hear from patients early on is:
“Why am I so tired?”
The good news is that fatigue on GLP-1 medications is common, usually temporary, and often very fixable. More importantly, it usually has less to do with the medication itself and more to do with what is happening in the body during rapid weight loss.
Let’s talk about what causes it and, more importantly, what you can do about it.
Why Fatigue Happens on GLP-1s
There are several reasons energy can dip when starting GLP-1 treatment.
Most commonly, it comes down to one or more of the following:
- not eating enough calories
- low protein intake
- dehydration
- electrolyte imbalance
- rapid weight loss
- low carbohydrate intake
- poor sleep
- vitamin deficiencies
- dose increases
In many cases, patients simply are not eating enough to support their energy needs.
What feels like “I’m eating fine” may actually be only 700–900 calories per day. That is often not enough to fuel the body well.
1. Make Sure You’re Eating Enough
First and foremost, under-eating is one of the biggest drivers of fatigue. Because appetite is lower, many patients unintentionally eat too little.
This can leave you feeling:
- exhausted
- weak
- dizzy
- mentally foggy
- drained after meals or workouts
In general, we want weight loss to happen at a healthy pace. 1–2 pounds per week is typically the fastest most patients should lose weight. If weight is dropping faster than that, your calories may be too low.
Even tracking intake for 3–5 days can be very eye-opening. Read and check out free apps here: Tracking Your Calories and Protein Matters
The goal is education, not creating more work.
2. Prioritize Protein
Protein is one of the most important tools for maintaining energy. Low protein intake can contribute to:
- fatigue
- muscle loss
- slower recovery
- poor satiety
- hair shedding
A good general target for many patients is: 80–120 grams per day depending on body size and goals.
Protein-rich options include:
- eggs
- Greek yogurt
- lean meats
- cottage cheese
- fish
- protein shakes
- collagen
- edamame or legumes
3. Hydrate More Than You Think
Another major cause of fatigue is dehydration. GLP-1 medications can make it easier to forget to drink enough fluids, especially if nausea or fullness is present.
Aim for 80–100+ ounces of water daily. If you’re feeling tired, headaches, dizziness, or dry mouth, hydration may be part of the issue.
4. Add Electrolytes
Just drinking water is not always enough. Low sodium, potassium, and magnesium can make fatigue worse. This is especially true if you are eating less overall.
Adding a daily electrolyte drink can make a noticeable difference in:
- energy
- headaches
- muscle cramps
- dizziness
- workout tolerance
This is one of the fastest fixes we recommend.
Sometimes fatigue is a sign of nutrient depletion. Common deficiencies we look for include:
- vitamin B12
- iron / ferritin
- vitamin D
- folate
- magnesium
At Flow Wellness, we often help patients assess whether labs or supportive supplementation may help. For some patients, B vitamin injections, nutrient IVs, or targeted supplements can be excellent options.
If you’re in Bend, our IV support options can be especially helpful.
6. Consider Whether Your Dose Is Too High
Sometimes fatigue worsens after a recent dose increase. If this happens, it may be a sign that your body needs more time to adjust.
Bigger dose jumps do not always mean better results. In fact, sometimes staying at a lower dose longer leads to better tolerance and more sustainable progress.
This is something your Flow Wellness provider can help assess.
Here’s What Matters Most
Feeling tired on GLP-1 medications is common, but it is usually fixable.
The biggest things to focus on are:
- eating enough calories
- getting enough protein
- slowing weight loss if needed
- hydration
- electrolytes
- nutrient support
- appropriate dosing
At Flow Wellness, we want you to lose weight while still feeling strong, energized, and well. Because the goal is not just weight loss. It’s feeling better.
