Think You’re Eating Enough on GLP-1s? Why Tracking Your Calories and Protein Matters
Starting a GLP-1 medication like semaglutide or tirzepatide can be a game-changer for weight loss. Appetite decreases, portions naturally get smaller, and for many patients, the scale starts moving quickly!
However, there’s one common issue we see over and over again:
patients think they’re getting enough calories and enough protein… but they’re often not.
In fact, once we actually track intake for a few days, many people realize they are eating far less than they thought. This matters more than most people realize.
Why This Happens on GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 medications work by slowing gastric emptying and reducing appetite.
As a result, many patients simply don’t feel hungry.
While that helps with weight loss, it can also make it surprisingly easy to under-eat without realizing it.
For example, what feels like “eating pretty normally” may only add up to:
- 700–900 calories per day
- 30–50 grams of protein
- very low hydration
- minimal micronutrient intake
For most adults, this is not enough to support healthy fat loss.
Instead, it can contribute to:
- fatigue
- muscle loss
- hair shedding
- slowed metabolism
- dizziness
- poor workout recovery
- stalled progress over time
Protein Is Usually the Biggest Miss
Protein is one of the first things to drop when appetite is low. Unfortunately, that is exactly what we want to protect during weight loss.
Without enough protein, the body is more likely to lose lean muscle mass instead of primarily fat.
This is one of the biggest reasons body composition can worsen even when the scale is going down. For most GLP-1 patients, a good general target is: 80–120 grams of protein per day depending on body size, activity level, and goals.
This is often much more than patients realize they are currently getting.
Don’t Guess — Track for 3 Days
Rather than estimating, we strongly recommend tracking your intake for at least 3 days.
Even a short tracking period can be incredibly eye-opening.
Patients often say things like:
“I thought I was getting plenty of protein.”
Then we look at the app together and it’s closer to 42 grams. That awareness helps us make small, strategic changes that protect muscle, hair, and energy.

How Much Weight Should You Be Losing?
Another important reminder: faster is not always better. In general, 1–2 pounds per week is the fastest most people should lose weight.
If weight is dropping faster than that, it often means calorie intake is too low.
That increases the risk of:
- muscle loss
- hair shedding
- fatigue
- nutrient depletion
Our goal is healthy, sustainable fat loss—not crash dieting.
A Few Days of Tracking Can Be Eye-Opening
The good news is, you do not need to track forever. For most patients, logging your food for just a few days can be incredibly eye-opening and educational.
The goal is not to create more work or make eating feel stressful. Instead, it’s simply a way to better understand what your body is actually getting. Think of it as a short-term learning tool, not a forever habit.
Once you have a clearer picture, it becomes much easier to make simple adjustments and build meals that support healthy, sustainable weight loss.
The Bottom Line
If you’re on GLP-1 therapy, do not rely on guessing.
What feels like “enough” is often less than your body needs.
Tracking calories and protein for even a few days can help ensure you are:
- preserving muscle
- protecting your hair
- maintaining energy
- losing fat safely
- preventing plateaus
