How To Administer a Subcutaneous (SQ) Injection

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 15 seconds

Prepare your supplies:

  • Take the vial out of the refrigerator.
  • Gather an insulin syringe and alcohol swab.
  • Have the sharps container nearby.
  • Open an alcohol swab and clean the top of the vial

Where to inject:

  • Open another alcohol swab and swab an area on your abdomen (belly) you plan to inject.
  • Anywhere on the lower abdomen in the fat is fine, just stay more than two inches away from the belly button.
  • Use a different injection area every week.

How to inject:

  • Remove the caps from both ends of the syringe.
  • Pull back the plunger to the dose that will be injected.
  • Hold the vial upside down and insert the needle into the center of the vial.
  • Push down on the plunger.
  • Pull back to withdraw the medication to the desired dose.
  • Turn the vial right side up and take out the needle slowly.

Inject the medicine:

  • Locate the area that you cleaned earlier.
  • Hold the syringe like a dart. Insert the needle quickly and perpendicular to the skin.
  • Push down on the plunger and hold for 3 extra seconds.
  • Take out the needle and put the syringe in the sharps container.
  • To avoid needle sticks, do not recap the needle.
