How To Administer a Subcutaneous (SQ) Injection
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 15 seconds
Prepare your supplies:
- Take the vial out of the refrigerator.
- Gather an insulin syringe and alcohol swab.
- Have the sharps container nearby.
- Open an alcohol swab and clean the top of the vial
Where to inject:
- Open another alcohol swab and swab an area on your abdomen (belly) you plan to inject.
- Anywhere on the lower abdomen in the fat is fine, just stay more than two inches away from the belly button.
- Use a different injection area every week.
How to inject:
- Remove the caps from both ends of the syringe.
- Pull back the plunger to the dose that will be injected.
- Hold the vial upside down and insert the needle into the center of the vial.
- Push down on the plunger.
- Pull back to withdraw the medication to the desired dose.
- Turn the vial right side up and take out the needle slowly.
Inject the medicine:
- Locate the area that you cleaned earlier.
- Hold the syringe like a dart. Insert the needle quickly and perpendicular to the skin.
- Push down on the plunger and hold for 3 extra seconds.
- Take out the needle and put the syringe in the sharps container.
- To avoid needle sticks, do not recap the needle.
